Laurie Burr Cameron, of Sandy Springs, died peacefully on April 20, 2018 after suffering injuries incurred from a fall at the end of a 25-mile cycling ride with her fiancé on Feb. 24. She was surrounded by family and loved ones at the Halcyon Hospice House in Sandy Springs.

Born Jan. 16, 1962, in Loraine, Ohio, the second daughter of Nancy and David Burr, Laurie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in marketing in 1984 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She followed a tradition of Miami family graduates that included her parents and two sisters. She later obtained a Paralegal Certificate.

Laurie had a successful career as a paralegal for Nations, Toman and McKnight and Maxwell Properties. At the time of her death, she was serving as Director of Operations at National Claims Services, Inc., a division of Allstar Financial Group.

She lived her life with a great passion for family, travel and all things adventurous and sporty. From a young age, she loved the challenge of speed and height, highlighted by jumps as an equestrian, and grew to become an accomplished tennis player, as well as a water sport enthusiast - from “dock start slalom” to wake surfing. Laurie’s natural athleticism and love of the outdoors led to her interest in cycling - both mountain biking during trips to Colorado and road cycling in the Atlanta area and near Lake Oconee. Growing up, she enjoyed camping, hiking and fishing with her family in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout her life, she loved traveling to many places in the United States, as well as Europe.

Preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Burr, Laurie is survived by her fiancé, Barry Mills; her father, David Burr and his wife, Becky Burr; sisters Leslie Medinger (Mark) and daughter, Lauren; and Janet Smith (Doug) and their children, Haley and Wyatt; daughters, Chandler Cameron and Lindsay Cameron and their father, Ron Cameron; as well as a future grandson, Brooks.

The family will have a private memorial service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The families gratefully acknowledge the loving care provided by the Neuro ICU staff at WellStar North Fulton Hospital, as well as the caring team at Halcyon Hospice House in Sandy Springs.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, which advocates for a safe and connected network of bike ways for bicyclists in the Atlanta area. Donations may be made, in memory of Laurie, on the website atlantabike.org.
